Home & outdoor
Cheap once, or cheap repeatedly
This is the category where reviews mislead most, because almost everything works when new. Expandable hoses burst at the collar after a season; insulated bottles leak once the seal ages; outdoor fabric fades in a summer. The useful question is never how a product performs on day one but what fails first and how long that takes — so we weight durability and the failure mode over launch-day impressions.

What we looked for
What fails first
Every product in this category has a known weak point. Fittings, seals and stitching tell you more than the headline material.
Survives being left outside
Sun and frost destroy more garden equipment than use does. UV and freeze resistance are the real specification.
Seals that stay sealed
For drinkware the lid mechanism is the whole product. Complex lids leak sooner and are harder to clean properly.

Common questions
- Do expandable hoses burst?
- Cheap ones do, almost always at the fitting where the inner tube is clamped. Metal fittings and a burst-resistant inner core are what separates a multi-season hose from a one-summer one.
- How should I store a hose over winter?
- Drain it completely and store it indoors. Water left inside freezes, expands and splits the inner tube — the single most common cause of failure.
- How long do insulated bottles keep drinks cold?
- A good double-walled vacuum bottle holds ice most of a day. Performance drops sharply if the vacuum seal is compromised by a hard drop, which is usually invisible from outside.
- Are insulated bottles dishwasher safe?
- Bodies often are; lids frequently are not, and that's where the seal lives. Hand-washing the lid is what keeps it from leaking.
- Does outdoor fabric fade?
- All of it eventually. Solution-dyed fabric holds colour far longer than surface-printed, which is the distinction worth paying for on anything left in direct sun.
